Divine Mercy Devotion

Devotion to the Divine Mercy Incarnate: Trust And Works Of Mercy

Contents

The Word
“devotion,” means fulfilling our vows. It is a commitment of our lives to the Lord who is Mercy itself.

By Giving our lives to the Divine Mercy – Jesus Christ Himself – we become instruments of His mercy to others, and so we can live out the command of the Lord:

“Be Merciful even as your Father is Merciful (Lk. 6:36)”

When He comes again, He will judge us on our mercy toward one another:

“Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of my brethren, you did it to me (Mt. 25:40)”

Not only are we to receive His mercy, but we are to use it, by being merciful to others by our actions, by our words, and by our prayers; in other words by practicing the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy are:

1.    Feed the hungry
2.    Give drink to the thirsty
3.    Clothe the naked
4.    Shelter the homeless
5.    Visit the sick
6.    Visit those in prison and;
7.    Bury the dead

The Spiritual Works of Mercy include :

» Admonish sinners
» Instruct the ignorant
» Counsel the doubtful
» Comfort the sorrowful
» Bear wrongs patiently
» Forgive injuries
» Pray for the living and the dead

Jesus appeared to Sister Faustina with rays of red and pale light streaming from the area around His heart. His hand was raised in blessing, recalling the scene of Easter Sunday Night. (Jn. 20: 19-23)

He presented this image to remind people to trust in his mercy, and to come to Him for mercy:
PEACE

The only source of peace in our troubled world is the mercy of God. The Lord made it clear to us through Sister Faustina: “Mankind will have no peace until it turns to my mercy!” (Diary 300)

Jesus explained that the rays represented the blood and water which flowed from His pierced side and taught Sister Faustina the prayer.

“O Blood and water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You” (Diary 84)

THE CHAPLET OF THE DIVINE MERCY

Our Lord taught Sister Faustina a prayer for ‘mercy’ that she was to pray ‘unceasingly.’ It is likewise appropriate to pray the Chaplet during the "Hour of Great Mercy" — three o'clock each afternoon (recalling the time of Christ’s death on the cross). In His revelations to St. Faustina, Our Lord asked for a special remembrance of His Passion at that hour. We can pray the Chaplet of Mercy using ordinary rosary beads of five decades.

1. Make the Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

2. Optional Opening Prayers

You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.

O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

3. Our Father

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.

4. Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.

5. The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified; died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

6. The Eternal Father

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

7. On the Ten Small Beads of Each Decade

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

8. Repeat for the remaining decades

Saying the "Eternal Father" (6) on the "Our Father" bead and then 10 "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion" (7) on the following "Hail Mary" beads.

9. Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times)

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

10. Optional Closing Prayer

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

At three o’clock, implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of agony. This is the hour of great mercy. In this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion (Diary, 1320).
At 3:00 o’clock we can pray:
You died, Jesus, but the source of life flowed out for souls and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fountain of Life, immeasurable Divine Mercy, cover the whole world and empty yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water which flowed out from the heart of Jesus as a Fountain for us, I trust in You!

“Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.” (3x) Amen.

Jesus, King of Mercy, we trust in You!
